Teen Take Heart

alt

altTeen Take Heart is a science-based cardiovascular curriculum for High School students. The program teaches students about basic science being done to treat and prevent heart disease, and helps them understand how healthy lifestyle choices could prevent heart disease in their future. It is currently in pilot phase at high schools in the Puget Sound area.

Now Accepting Applications for:

Summer High School Science Teacher Institute

Professional & Curriculum Development Opportunity

July 12-July 23, 2010

Application

altBACKGROUND:  The Hope Heart Institute was founded more than 50 years ago by Dr. Lester Sauvage, a Seattle-based cardio-thoracic surgeon who pioneered the heart bypass.  The Hope started by doing basic (“bench”) research and now does clinical research as well.  Today, The Hope's research remains at the forefront of the cardiovascular field—and our health education publications reach nearly 5 million readers a year. The Hope also has elementary and middle school classroom-based programs.

Seattle University is the largest private university in the Pacific Northwest. The Teen Take Heart team will have access to Seattle University College of Nursing Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP) and the adjacent Clinical Performance Lab (CPL). The CPL is a 20,000 square foot space and will be a central venue for the institute. The lab includes a state-of-the-art simulation environment, which will be incorporated into the program.

TTHPURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM:  Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, driven by lifestyle, genes and other factors.  Heart disease related health care costs US citizens $316.4 billion per year (2010 Update, American Heart Association).  The Hope Heart Institute is interested in recruiting up to 10 high school science teachers to form a team to work with scientists and health professionals.  This team will continue to develop a biology-based unit that uses science to motivate students to make heart healthy lifestyle choices. The new lessons will then be piloted in the developing teachers’ classrooms.

One of the goals is to provide context to learn concepts already covered in a high school biology class.  The lessons will be structured to prepare students to meet Washington State Science Standards. From what the team develops, The Hope will pursue funding to expand the reach of the program and continue creating a kit of materials to support the lessons.  The funding will make the lessons and kits available to teachers for free, especially teachers serving vulnerable populations.

ELIGIBILITY:
We are seeking teachers with the creative ability to take cutting edge scientific information and work as a team to translate it into engaging high school level lessons.  High school teachers with all levels of classroom experience are encouraged to apply.
